You can barely move for all the short film screenings in London these days, and hooray for that, I say. Making short films is a creative outlet for those of us for whom filmmaking is more like an addiction than a choice. Perhaps more importantly, it is also ripe testing ground for people with bigger projects, and bigger prospects in the film industry, ahead.

It is with this enthusiasm and support for the short film format in mind that I decided to launch a new shorts screening night - Show Us Your Shorts - as part of Women in Film and Television’s ongoing events programme.
The USP? Only films made by members of WFTV are to be screened.

Having made short films myself, I know the excitement that comes with finishing a film, and the prospect that it can now be screened to audiences beyond your own family and friends (those long-suffering souls). There is also often a feeling of fear at that stage, as you prepare to put your baby out into the big, bad world.

Short film nights offer a friendly testing ground; the audience usually consists of other filmmakers, who can empathise with the inevitable difficulties you experienced through production, but also provide valuable constructive criticism based on their own experience of making and watching short films. I hope Show Us Your Shorts will be both supportive and challenging to our filmmakers in this way, too.
